Features of the Nord Stage 4
More than just a stage piano, the Nord Stage 4 has been decked out with three sound engines and a mass of effects - more on this in a bit. You're completely free to create your own sounds or simply select one of the many presets. Round the back of the keyboard you'll find every port needed to integrate the unit into your studio set-up or live rig, including MIDI, USB and line outputs, but also sustain, swell, and controller pedal inputs.
The Sounds of the Clavia Nord Stage 4
The massive number of controls on the face of the Nord Stage 4 are split into four dedicated sections: an organ section, a piano section, a synth section and an effects section. In terms of organs, you get the pick of a Farfisa, a Vox, a pipe organ and the Hammond B3, plus drawbars and rotary speaker simulation, of course. The piano section serves up two gigabytes worth of samples of various pianos, while the synth section is powered by the Nord Wave 2 engine (3 layers) and comes with a 1GB sample memory bank as well as support for round robins and FM synthesis. Last but not least, there's the FX section which is where you'll find modulation effects, reverb, delay and other welcome little tools that can help perfect the sound.

Nord stage 4 is a top of the line keyboard with a wide selection of sounds (available via their piano and sample libraries) and high customizability. Compared to the older models, you now have 2 independent layers for organ, piano and 3 for synths, each with their own effects chain, which allows for much better control over each layer and sound. The product description mentions that it doesn't come with a pedal, but when it arrived it contained the Nord sustain pedal, so don't worry about that. The build quality is obviously very good, and the controls feel very nice, both the buttons and the organ drawbards (which click on each step). They really put in a lot of thought on the control panel and how easy and quick it is to change parameters, linking to modulation wheel, etc. This means that this product is very well suited for live situations, and the sound it delivers is exceptional. The available presets all sound very good as it is, but they are also a very good starting point for your own custom sound! All-in-all, it is a professional, high-quality product that is definitely worth it's value.
Nord Stage behoeft eigenlijk geen uitleg. Maar het is een prachtig apparaat. Of je nu plug- en play wilt en sounds download, of ze helemaal zelf op wilt bouwen, je kan het beide. En aan alles merk je dat het uitgangspunt is om goed te kunnen performen on Stage. De prijs is hoog, maar de waarde blijft ook hoog mocht je hem weer van de hand willen doen. Tips voor nieuwe aankopers: naast Nord Sound Library en Nord User Forum, check ook eens in bij ChatGPT om je te voorzien van tips voor je sounds te maken. Erg leuk en leerzaam!
Kort samengevat: echt een top apparaat. Ik had eerst een Nord Stage 2 en t.o.v. hiervan echt zoveel meer mogelijkheden. Het werken met de faders vind ik ook een stuk intuitiever dan met panel A en B. Daarnaast erg fijn dat elke layer nu afzonderlijk met de effecten bewerkt kan worden. Dit is ook wel nodig want ik heb het gevoel dat sommige geluiden wel wat doffer of dunner klinken dan in de Nord Stage 2, maar met EQ echt prima aan te passen zodat de geluiden echt super goed klinken.
Ik twijfelde tussen de 73 en de 88. Uiteindelijk voor de 73 gegaan. Tot nu toe geen spijt, eigenlijk heeft die hierdoor de lengte van een 61 keys (omdat de pitchwheel boven de toetsen zit). Hierdoor is hij mooi compact en gemakkelijk te vervoeren.
